Store in a Cool Dry Place
"Store in a Cool Dry Place" (2016) is a collaborative moving image project with Jyoti Mistry, created as a response to the group exhibition "When Tomorrow Comes". Initially showcased at the Wits Art Museum and later at the Michaelis Galleries at the University of Cape Town, the exhibition posed questions about the apocalyptic and the exhaustion of metaphor and metonymy in the face of social and environmental collapse.
In this piece, we challenge the stereotypical apocalyptic narratives often presented in mainstream visual cultures, such as Hollywood disaster films. Our inspiration stems from two key documents: a piece of writing titled "Pushing On/Off Buttons of Consciousness" (2016), and video footage documenting the rituals of coffin-making in three African cities - Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, and Accra.
The film is an attempt to disrupt the single-screen epic narrative of the 'end of times' stories. Instead of following a linear storyline, we created a sculptural structure to project video fragments and city imagery, providing a nuanced exploration of the apocalyptic theme. In this way, "Store in a Cool Dry Place" offers a unique perspective on apocalyptic narratives and challenges the viewer's preconceptions of what an 'end of times' narrative can be.
